These tall formations sit at the foothills of the Pirin mountain range. They cover a large area of 17 square kilometers. Some of these stone shapes reach 100 meters into the sky. They look like giant mushrooms, old towers, or tall obelisks.

People from all over the world come to see them.

How did these strange shapes form? It all comes down to a thing called erosion. Erosion happens when rain and wind wear away rock.

The pyramids are made of sandstone and conglomerate. These rocks are not all the same strength. Rain drops wash away the softer parts of the rock. This happens a lot when snow melts in the mountains. However, some clay in the top layers hardens from the sun. This hard clay forms a protective cap. This cap stops the rock underneath from washing away too fast.

These rocks have a very long history. Millions of years ago, this area was actually a lake. The sediments that make the pyramids were left behind 5 to 3 million years ago.

Scientists found remains of ancient animals in the older rock layers. These included ancient horses and elephant-like mammals. The different layers of rock were formed during the Miocene and Quaternary periods. In 1960, the area was named a natural landmark. This helps keep the special site safe for everyone.

There are many interesting facts about this place. The pyramids show many colors like yellow and red. This red color comes from iron minerals in the rock.

The area is home to 113 different kinds of birds. Some of these birds are very special to the Mediterranean climate. The pyramids sit at an altitude between 350 and 850 meters. They are about 180 kilometers south of the capital city, Sofia. This land is part of the Melnishka River valley.

Visiting the pyramids is a great way to learn about nature. You can see many types of trees like oak and hornbeam. You can also visit the nearby town of Melnik. The town is famous for its old houses and red wine. Many people also travel to see the Rozhen Monastery. It was built in the early 13th century. It sits right among the earth pyramids. The whole area feels like a window into the deep past.
