Pobiti Kamani

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Pobiti Kamani is a strange place in Bulgaria. Its name means "planted stones." This site looks like a dry desert. It sits on the border of the Varna Province. The area has many tall stone pillars. These pillars are called tubular concretions. They are very important to learn about.

Scientists study how these stones formed. They think gas rose from deep underground. This gas is called methane. The gas moved up in plumes. These plumes are rising paths of fluid. The gas helped create carbonate precipitation. This is a way that minerals harden. The minerals formed columns in the sand. Now, the sand is gone. This left a desert-like landscape behind.

People have studied these rocks for a long time. Victor Teplyakov was a Russian historian. He was also an archaeologist. He first described the stones in 1829. Later, the site became a natural landmark. This happened in the late 1930s. This helps keep the area safe. Experts want to protect these special rocks.

There are seven groups of stone pillars. One group is called Dikilitash. It is the main group. It has over 350 stones. Another group is called Strashimirovo. These stones have a bulging middle. They look different from the others. Scientists use special tools to study them. They look at carbon isotopes in the rocks. This helps them understand the past.

Sometimes, people get confused by photos of the site. In September 2020, a fake photo went online. Someone used Photoshop to make the stones red. They claimed it was a NASA photo of Mars. But the photo was actually from Bulgaria. It was not from space at all. This shows how amazing the Earth can look. It can even look like another planet.
