Pobiti Kamani

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

In Bulgaria, there is a strange place with stone poles.

We call this place Pobiti Kamani. The name means "planted stones." These stones look like a dry desert. They are found in the Varna Province.

How did they form? Scientists think gas rose from deep underground. This gas is called methane. The gas moved up through the sand in plumes. This movement helped make the stone pillars. This set of steps is a way to make concretions. A concretion is a hard mass of mineral.

There are seven groups of these stone pillars. One big group is called Dikilitash. It has more than 350 stones! Another group is called Strashimirovo. These stones have a bulging middle part.

Victor Teplyakov first described the stones in 1829. Later, the area became a natural landmark. This helps keep the site safe. Some people once shared a fake photo online. They said the photo was from Mars. But the photo was actually of these stones in Bulgaria.
