This hit made a giant hole. We call this a crater. It happened about 35 million years ago. This rock was a bolide, which is a large space object. It was many kilometers wide. The impact changed the ground forever. The hit made a lot of shock pressure. This pressure turned graphite into diamonds. Graphite is a soft form of carbon. The new diamonds are tiny. Most are only 1 millimeter wide.

These are called impact diamonds. They are made when a meteorite hits the ground at high speed. Some of these diamonds have lonsdaleite in them. Lonsdaleite is a type of carbon. It can be even harder than normal diamonds. These diamonds are not good for jewelry. They are better for industrial tools. The site is a UNESCO Geopark. This means it is a place of special value. People study the site to learn about the past.
