This rock forms very deep in the Earth. It comes from the mantle. The mantle is a layer far below the surface. It forms at depths between 150 and 450 kilometers.

Kimberlite forms when rock melts deep down. This melted rock is called magma. The magma has a lot of carbon dioxide in it. This gas makes the magma rise very fast. The rise is violent and explosive. These explosions create tall, carrot-shaped structures. We call these structures kimberlite pipes.

As the magma explodes upward, it brings things with it. It carries diamonds from the deep mantle to the surface. It also carries small pieces of other rocks. These pieces are called xenoliths. Geologists study these rocks to learn about the deep Earth. They look for tiny minerals to find where the pipes are. These tiny bits are called indicator minerals. They help people find diamond mines.
