It is a very large pit in the ground. Long ago, people dug it by hand. They used picks and shovels to find diamonds.

Many people came to work there. Up to 50,000 miners worked at the site. The work was very hard and dangerous. Many men died from mining accidents. They also got sick from heat and bad water.

Many miners were from the Basotho group. They used a way to cope called the Koata strategy. This meant they would sing or shout to deal with fear.

By 1914, the miners had dug out 22 million tons of rock. They found 3,000 kilograms of diamonds!
