Augrabies Falls

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Augrabies Falls is a big waterfall. It sits on the Orange River. This is the largest river in South Africa. The falls are inside a national park. The area is rugged and lonely.

Long ago, the Khoikhoi people lived here. They called the falls "Ankoerebis." This means "place of great noise." Later, people called it "Augrabies." A man named Klaas Pofadder lived on an island upstream. We now call it Klaas Island.

In 1920, Deneys Reitz swam behind the falls. He went into a cave there. The falls have a deep canyon. The water flows through hard granite rock. This water carves the land over time.

Sometimes the river floods. During big floods, the water moves very fast. It can move more water than Niagara Falls. This can be dangerous for people and animals. Even hippos have been swept over the falls. Some people tell stories about the area. They say a monster called the Grootslang lives in the water. Others say the river carries diamonds to the pool.
