They sit on the Mekong River. This area is near the border of Cambodia. These falls are very special. They are the widest in the world. They span 10,783 metres from side to side.

The water flows through many channels. There are thousands of islands here. People call this place Si Phan Don. This name means "the 4,000 islands."

The falls make the river hard to use. Boats cannot travel from here to China. Long ago, people tried to move boats through the falls. They could not do it. They built a small railway on the islands instead.

Many animals live in the water. A small fish called a hillstream loach lives here. There is also a large catfish called the plabuck. This fish is endangered. It might be the largest freshwater fish in the world. Some say it can reach 3 metres long. It can also weigh up to 300 kilograms.
