geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Khone Phapheng Falls are a huge wonder in Laos. They sit on the Mekong River in Champasak Province. This place is very close to the border of Cambodia. These falls are the widest in the whole world. They span 10,783 metres from one edge to the other.

This width is about 6.7 miles. The falls are also the largest in southeast Asia. They change how the river flows through the land.

Water moves through the falls in many ways. There are thousands of islands in this area. Because of these islands, people call it Si Phan Don. This name means "the 4,000 islands."

The water flows through countless waterways and channels. Some parts of the falls are very high. The water creates many rapids as it moves. The average flow of water is nearly 11,000 cubic metres per second. The highest flow ever recorded was over 40,000 cubic metres per second.

In the late 19th century, people tried to change things. French colonialists wanted to move boats through the falls. They wanted to connect the river to China. However, their efforts to navigate the falls failed. The falls stop boats from traveling to and from China. Because they could not use boats, they built something else. They made the Don Det–Don Khon railway on two islands. This railway sits on Don Det and Don Khon.

Many living things call these waters home. A small fish called a hillstream loach lives here. Scientists only know of one specimen of this fish.

There is also a very big catfish called the plabuck. This catfish is an endangered species. Some say it is the largest freshwater fish in the world. It might grow to be 3 metres long. It could even weigh up to 300 kilograms.

These falls are a very important part of the Mekong River. They act like a giant wall for boat traffic. This makes the river different from other parts of the world. You can see how the water breaks into many paths. The islands make the river look like a maze.
