A long time ago, a giant space rock hit Earth.

This event happened about 66 million years ago. It hit a place in Mexico called Chicxulub. This big crash caused many living things to die out. This includes the non-avian dinosaurs.

Scientists Luis and Walter Alvarez first suggested this idea. They found a lot of iridium in the ground. Iridium is a metal that is rare on Earth. It is more common in space rocks. This helped them prove a crash happened.

When the rock hit, it was very powerful. It released a huge amount of energy. The crash melted rocks and sent them into the air. It also sent dust and gases into the sky. This changed the climate and made the world much colder. This made it hard for many animals to find food.

Some scientists study volcanoes in India called the Deccan Traps. They think these eruptions also changed the world. Some believe the space rock even helped start the volcanoes. This is still a big topic that scientists study today.
