Popigai impact structure

earth science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Popigai impact structure is a special place in northern Siberia, Russia.

It is the remains of a giant crater. This site is the fourth largest verified impact structure on Earth. It is located east from the Khatanga outpost. It sits northeast of the city of Norilsk. UNESCO calls it a Geopark because it has special geological heritage.

A large space object called a bolide hit the Earth here. This happened about 35 million years ago. The impact created huge shock pressures in the ground. These pressures changed the way carbon looks in the soil. The hit turned graphite into diamonds almost instantly. This happened within a radius of the impact point. The diamonds kept the shape of the original graphite grains.

Scientists have studied this site for many decades. For a long time, the area was off limits. This was because of the diamonds found there. A major expedition finally went there in 1997. This trip helped people understand the structure much better. The impactor was likely an H chondrite asteroid. It may have been several kilometers in diameter.

Many facts about these diamonds are very interesting. Most of the diamonds are only 1 millimeter wide. They are made of tiny clusters called nanodiamonds. Some diamonds contain lonsdaleite, which is a type of carbon. Pure lonsdaleite can be 58% harder than ordinary diamonds. Scientists even found carbon polymorphs at the site. These are even harder than pure lonsdaleite.

These special stones are called impact diamonds. They form when a meteorite hits graphite at high speed. You might know diamonds from shiny jewelry. However, these diamonds are not good for gems. They are better for industrial uses. The site is very remote and lacks infrastructure. This makes it hard to mine the diamonds there. They are not as easy to get as synthetic diamonds.
