Dali Kingdom

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Dali Kingdom was a strong state in modern Yunnan, China. It lasted from the year 937 until 1253. The name Dali comes from Dali City. In the Chinese language, the word Dali means marble. This name is very fitting because the area is famous for its high quality marble.

The kingdom was a special place that connected different lands and cultures.

Before the Dali Kingdom began, the area went through many quick changes. A group called Nanzhao was overthrown in 902. After that, three different kingdoms ruled for just a few years each. These were the Great Changhe, Great Tianxing, and Great Yining kingdoms. Finally, in 937, a man named Duan Siping took power. He started the Dali Kingdom and established his rule. The Duan family claimed they had ancestors from the Han people.

Life in the kingdom involved many powerful families. The Duan family were the kings, but the Gao family held much of the real power. In 1094, a prime minister named Gao Shengtai took the throne for a short time. He even changed the name to the Dazhong Kingdom. After he died in 1096, the Duan family became the rulers again. However, the Gao family stayed in high positions at the court. Some history books say the kings were like puppets for the Gao officials.

Religion played a huge part in how the kingdom was run. King Duan Zhixing was a very important ruler who loved Buddhism. He used the religion to help bring peace to his people. In 1190, he sponsored the building of 16 different temples. One famous place for these religious activities was the Chongsheng Temple.

This temple was a center for spreading Buddhist ideas across the land.

Everything changed in 1253 when the Mongols invaded. The Mongol leader Kublai sent his army to conquer the land. The Dali army fought many battles to defend their home. The king, Duan Xingzhi, had to flee to find help. After two years of fighting, he surrendered in 1256. Even after the conquest, the Duan family continued to rule as local chiefs. They served as leaders in Yunnan for many generations under Mongol rule.
