It was located in a place we now call Xishuangbanna in China. The capital city was Chiang Hung, which people call Jinghong today. This kingdom was very important in the north of the region. It grew to be quite strong during the 13th century. Many different groups of people lived in and around this land. It was a central place for Tai culture for a long time.

The kingdom began with a leader named Phanya Coeng. He established the kingdom in 1180 on the Mekong River. Later, a king named Inmueng helped the land grow much larger. He gained control over many other Tai kingdoms in the north. These included places like Kengtung and Luang Prabang. Because of his work, the Tai Lü people spread out. They lived across a very large area of influence.

History shows that many powerful neighbors wanted to rule Chiang Hung. In 1290, the Mongol Yuan dynasty invaded the area. Later, the Lanna kingdom also held power over the land. By 1558, the Burmese Toungoo dynasty took control instead. The Burmese divided the land into twelve different districts. The Tai Lü people called these districts Sipsong Panna. This name means "Twelve Districts" in their language.

A difficult time came in 1847 due to a struggle for power. King Mahawan died, and his son Prince Sarawan tried to take over. However, an uncle named Prince Mahakhanan took the throne instead. This caused a lot of fighting and chaos for the people. The Burmese invaded the area during these fights. Because of the trouble, many Tai Lü people had to leave. They moved to places like Lanna to find a new home.

The status of the kingdom changed as China's history changed. After the Chinese Empire ended, the kingdom's official status ended too. Local leaders were still called tusi by the Republic of China. One last chieftain was named Dao Shixun. He attended a big ceremony in 1949 in China. Today, the area is the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Region. Many Tai Lü people still live in Thailand and Laos.
