Long ago in China, many different groups of thinkers shared new ideas.

One important group was called the Mohists. They followed the teachings of a man named Mozi. This group lived during a time called the Spring and Autumn and Warring States period. This was between 770 and 221 BC. Mohism was a major rival to another group called the Confucians. The Mohists focused on ethics, logic, and even scientific technology. They wrote down their ideas in a special book called the Mozi.

One of the most famous ideas in Mohism is "universal love."

Some people call this "impartial care." It means you should care for every person in the same way. You should not care more for a stranger than for your own family. Mozi believed that everyone deserves to be protected from harm. He also thought everyone should receive help with their basic needs. This was very different from the Confucians. They believed it was natural to love your family more than others. Mohists wanted to move away from focusing only on family ties.

Mohists were also very good at science and math. They were famous for being great defense engineers. They used their skills to help smaller states defend themselves. They did not like aggressive wars, but they believed in defending a home.

A famous story tells of Mozi stopping an invasion. He traveled for ten days and nights to help the state of Song. He showed a man named Gongshu Pan that he could defend the city. Mozi said his followers were already ready on the walls. Because of this, the king decided to cancel his invasion.

These thinkers also had big ideas about how to run a country. Mozi believed in something called meritocracy. This means leaders should pick people for jobs based on their skills. It should not be because they are related to the ruler. This was a way to stop nepotism, which is giving jobs to family members. A good leader should look for talented people to help the land. Mozi compared a ruler to a carpenter. A carpenter uses standard tools to do good work. A ruler should use the standards of Heaven to be fair.

Finally, Mohists believed in living very simple lives. They practiced being thrifty, which means not wasting things. They thought having enough food and clothing was very important. They wanted a society where people had many children and plenty of resources.

They believed that when people have what they need, they will be kind. This way of thinking helped them try to create a peaceful world. Even though Mohism changed over time, its ideas were very powerful in ancient China.
