There are two main ways we feel this. First, there is physical suffering. This happens in the body. It can be hunger or thirst. It can be feeling too hot or too cold. It can even be an itch.

Second, there is mental suffering. This happens in the mind. It can be feelings like sadness or fear. It can also be anger or guilt. These feelings can be mild or very strong.

Many people study suffering. They want to find ways to help. Some thinkers believe we should try to stop all suffering. Others think suffering is a part of life. Even ancient groups studied it. For example, some Greeks thought you could find peace by changing how you think.
