Some people may even cry.

Sadness helps us in two main ways. First, it helps us change how we think. It can help us look at our goals in new ways. Second, it tells others that we need help. We might show this by being kind or by asking for support.

Scientists study how sadness works in the brain. They use special tools to see brain activity. For example, they use PET scans. These scans show which parts of the brain are working. When people think of sad things, certain parts of the brain become very active.

People also show sadness in their voices. A sad voice is often slow and low. It may also have less power. In many places, people can recognize sadness by looking at faces. They can also recognize it by hearing a voice.
