When someone feels sad, they might become very quiet or slow. Some people also choose to withdraw from others to find space. Crying is a common way to show this feeling. Paul Ekman, a researcher, named sadness as one of the six basic emotions. Other basic emotions include happiness, anger, surprise, fear, and disgust.

Sadness works in two helpful ways to help us deal with life. First, it can change how we think about our goals and beliefs. For example, sad people might make different political choices because they are not following old patterns. Second, sadness acts as a signal to others that we need help.

We might signal this by being kinder to others or by asking for support. This can actually help people build stronger relationships with each other. It can even help groups get along better by reducing big disagreements.

Children experience sadness as they grow and become more independent. Pediatrician T. Berry Brazelton says that acknowledging sadness helps families. It is a normal part of a child learning to be on their own. Margaret Mahler believed that feeling sadness is a big emotional achievement. Other experts, like Donald Winnicott, thought sad crying could lead to loving music later in life.

It is important to let children feel these feelings fully. Some people worry that too much cheering up can make the emotion seem less important.

Scientists use tools like PET scans to study sadness in the brain. These scans show which parts of the brain are active.

Researchers found that sadness involves activity in many areas. This includes the middle and posterior temporal cortex and the midbrain. When people watch sad films, their prefrontal cortex becomes very active. One specific area called Brodmann's area 9 also shows more activity. This helps us understand the physical side of our feelings.

We can also recognize sadness through voices and eyes. A sad voice is often slow, low in pitch, and has less energy.

In Western countries, people recognize sad faces with 79% accuracy. They recognize sad voices with 71% accuracy. Even our pupils can show how we feel. When we look at sad faces with small pupils, our own pupils may get smaller too. This is linked to how much empathy we feel for others.
