Grief is the way people react when they lose something important. This often happens when a person or an animal they love dies.

However, grief can also come from other types of loss. A person might feel grief if they lose a job or a home.

Some losses are physical, like losing a spouse. Other losses are more abstract, like changes in how people interact socially. Grief is the reaction to a loss, while bereavement is the state of being in that loss.

Scientists study how people adapt to these changes. One famous idea was the five stages of grief. This model was introduced by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross in her 1969 book, On Death and Dying. The stages include denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.

A study in 2003 found that while the sequence was often correct, acceptance was actually present throughout the whole experience. Today, researchers use more flexible ways to understand this complex process.

One important way to look at grief is the Two-Track Model of Bereavement. Simon Shimshon Rubin created this model in 1981. It looks at two different paths at once. Track one focuses on how a person functions in their daily life. This includes things like work, relationships, and physical health.

Track two looks at the ongoing relationship with the person who is gone. It examines memories and how much emotional closeness was shared. This model helps people understand how to live in a reality where the loved one is absent.

Researcher George Bonanno has studied grief for over twenty years. He studied thousands of people in places like the U.S., Israel, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and China.

Bonanno found that most people show natural resilience. Resilience is the ability to stay healthy and stable after a hard event. He identified four paths people might take. These are resilience, recovery, chronic dysfunction, and delayed trauma. He also noted that grief can look unexpected. He called this "coping ugly" when people react with laughter or celebration.

Grief even affects how the body works. Studies using fMRI scans show that grief can cause a local inflammation response in the body. This is linked to parts of the brain that process emotions, like the frontal lobe.

Some people even report feeling like they have seen or heard a loved one after they pass away. A 2008 survey by Amanda Barusch found that 27% of people who lost a loved one had such an experience. While grief is a very hard job, it is a natural part of being human.
