When an individual experiences sadness, they may become lethargic or quiet. They might also withdraw from social groups. While sadness is a common mood, severe forms can lead to depression. This includes conditions like major depressive disorder or persistent depressive disorder. Psychologist Paul Ekman identified sadness as one of the six basic human emotions. The other five are happiness, anger, surprise, fear, and disgust.

Neuroscientists study how sadness affects the physical brain. Researchers use positron emission tomography, or PET scans, to observe brain activity. In one study, seven people were asked to think about sad things. This caused increased activity in the bilateral inferior and orbitofrontal cortex. When people watch emotional film clips, different areas react. This includes the thalamus and the prefrontal cortex. Specifically, activity increases in a region called Brodmann's area 9. Other active areas include the midbrain, the putamen, and the caudate. Activity is also seen in the bilateral anterior temporal structures and the temporal cortex.

Functional theories suggest that sadness serves specific purposes. It helps people cope with difficult situations through two primary functions. First, sadness promotes cognitive changes. These changes help a person restructure their beliefs and reevaluate their goals. For example, sad people may be less influenced by their existing schemas. This includes schemas related to political ideology. When making political decisions, they might not follow typical conservative or liberal heuristics. Second, sadness acts as a social signal. It tells others that a person needs assistance or support.

This social signaling happens through various behaviors. A person might follow group norms or act more kindly toward others. They may also express a need for help through physical or verbal means. When a group experiences sadness together, it can decrease emotional polarization. This process can actually help in building stronger relationships. People deal with these feelings using different coping mechanisms. Some people seek social support or spend time with a pet. Others might create a list or engage in an activity to express the emotion. Some choose to isolate themselves to recover. However, certain strategies like ruminating or "drowning one's sorrows" can actually keep sadness going. Cognitive behavioral therapy suggests challenging negative thoughts instead. It also suggests scheduling positive distractions.

Sadness is a vital part of childhood development. It is a normal part of a child separating from an early symbiosis with their mother. As children become more independent, they must cope with small losses. Pediatrician T. Berry Brazelton suggests that acknowledging sadness helps families address serious problems. He argues that cheering a child up too much can devalue the emotion. Psychologist Selma Fraiberg believed it is important to respect a child's right to feel loss deeply.

Margaret Mahler viewed the ability to feel sadness as an emotional achievement. Donald Winnicott even linked sad crying to valuable musical experiences later in life.

We can also identify sadness through physical cues like the eyes and voice. Pupil size can indicate the intensity of sadness. If a person has a sad expression with small pupils, it is judged as more intense. A person's own pupils may even mirror the size of the pupils they are viewing. This mirroring is linked to a person's level of empathy.

In terms of sound, scientist Swati Johar notes that sadness is identified by speech processing systems. A sad voice typically has a lower mean pitch and lower intensity. It also features a slower speaking rate and more silence between words. Researcher Klaus Scherer found that sadness is one of the best-recognized emotions in the human voice. In Western countries, facial recognition for sadness is 79% accurate. Vocal recognition is 71% accurate. In non-Western countries, these numbers are 74% and 58% respectively.

Throughout history, sadness has been viewed in many ways. During the Renaissance, Edmund Spenser saw sadness as a sign of spiritual commitment. In literature, J.R.R. Tolkien used sadness to show a settled determination. This was different from the shallower feelings of despair or hope.

Finally, Julia Kristeva described a variety of moods and mourning as a sign of humanity. She suggested that being ready to fight and being creative are part of this subtle human experience.
