"text": "Embarrassment is a complex emotional state characterized by varying levels of discomfort. It is categorized as a \"self-conscious emotion,\" meaning it involves thinking about how one is perceived by others. This feeling often arises when a person commits or contemplates a socially unacceptable act. Such an act is usually witnessed or revealed to other people. At its core, embarrassment often involves a perceived loss of honor, dignity, or other high-value ideals. This emotion can have a profound impact on an individual's subsequent thoughts and behaviors.

\n\nThe causes of embarrassment are diverse and can be categorized by their source. Personal embarrassment often stems from unwanted attention to private matters, personal flaws, or mishaps. It can also result from personal actions, such as making a mistake or being caught in a lie. Many cultures view being seen nude or inappropriately dressed as a particularly stressful form of embarrassment. Additionally, the actions of others can trigger this state. This includes being the subject of gossip, being rejected, or having a parent show baby pictures to friends. Even being the center of positive attention, such as a birthday celebrant, can cause it.

\n\nPhysically, personal embarrassment often manifests through specific bodily responses. An individual may experience blushing, sweating, nervousness, stammering, or fidgeting. To cope, some people attempt to mask the feeling with smiles or nervous laughter. This is particularly common in certain etiquette situations, though it can lead to social misunderstandings. Depending on the perceived seriousness, a person might also feel anger. This is especially true if they believe another person is intentionally causing the discomfort. Responses range from viewing the event as humorous to feeling intense apprehension or fear.\n\nResearchers have studied the social functions of this emotion to understand why it exists. Erving Goffman proposed that embarrassment serves an apology or appeasement function. He argued that an embarrassed person demonstrates they are disturbed by their actions. This can prove they are worthy of social acceptance at another time. This idea was supported by researchers Semin and Manstead. They found that a person who knocked over a sales display was deemed more likable if they appeared embarrassed. This was true regardless of whether they actually rebuilt the display. Furthermore, embarrassment can act as a \"brake\" on antisocial behavior. Studies showed that adolescent boys who displayed more embarrassment were less likely to engage in aggressive or delinquent behaviors. In fact, the embarrassment shown by aggressive boys was less than one-third of that shown by non-aggressive boys.\n\nEmbarrassment can also take a professional or official form. This occurs when organizations or officials face scrutiny regarding their duties or decisions. Professional embarrassment increases significantly when it involves workplace facilities, large sums of money, or the loss of human life. Examples include a government's failed public policy or the exposure of corrupt practices. Even small errors can lead to major official embarrassment if there was a willful disregard for evidence. For instance, the Space Shuttle Challenger incident is a notable example of such failure. Unlike personal disappointment, which a scientist might feel if a hypothesis is wrong, professional embarrassment occurs when something like falsified data is exposed. In response, embarrassed entities may issue press statements, distance themselves from employees, or attempt to minimize consequences.\n\nPsychologists have developed different typologies to classify the various ways embarrassment occurs. Sharkey and Stafford identified six specific types. These include privacy violations, such as an invasion of personal space or information. They also noted a lack of knowledge or skill, such as failing at an easy task. Other types include criticism and rejection, awkward acts like clumsiness, and concerns regarding appropriate image, such as clothing. Finally, the environment itself can provoke embarrassment, such as unexpected nudity in a movie theater. Cupach and Metts offered another view, focusing on four circumstances: faux pas, accidents, mistakes, and failures. They further divided these into situations where the actor is responsible or the observer is responsible.\n\n
