Emotions can be big or small. Some feelings last a long time. Others happen very fast.

Emotions have many parts. One part is how we think about a situation. This is called cognitive appraisal. Another part is how our bodies change. For example, your heart might beat fast. You might also change your face or voice. This helps show others how you feel.

Some scientists study basic emotions. Paul Ekman found that some emotions are the same for everyone. He studied six basic ones: anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, and surprise. Other researchers found even more. They found feelings like awe, pride, and shame.

Robert Plutchik made a special tool. He called it the wheel of emotions.

He thought some emotions could blend together. Just like colors, they can make new feelings. This helps us understand the many ways we feel every day.
