Temperament

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Have you ever noticed how everyone acts differently? This is called temperament. It is your unique way of reacting to the world. Scientists say temperament is something you are born with. It does not change much as you grow up.

Researchers have studied how babies act. In a famous study, experts found three main groups. About 40% of babies are "easy." They have steady sleep and eating habits. They are often in a good mood. About 10% are "difficult." These babies may cry a lot. They might have irregular sleep patterns. About 15% are "slow-to-warm-up." These babies may shy away from new things. They need time to feel safe before they join in.

Other scientists look at specific traits. One trait is activity level. This is how much physical energy a child has. Some children are always moving. Others like to sit still. Another trait is regularity. This is how predictable a child's body is. For example, an easy baby might want to eat at the same time every day. These patterns help us understand how people fit in at school and home.
