Long ago, doctors used a system called humorism. They believed the body was made of four fluids. These are known as humors. The four humors are blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile.

To stay healthy, these fluids must be in balance. This balance is called eucrasia. If a person has too much or too little of a fluid, they might get sick. This imbalance is called dyscrasia.

Many things could change the mix of these fluids. The food you eat matters. For example, warm foods might make more yellow bile. Cold foods might make more phlegm. Even the weather and the season can help change them. Galen, a famous doctor, linked the humors to the seasons. He said blood is like spring. Yellow bile is like summer. Black bile is like autumn. Phlegm is like winter.

Doctors tried to fix the balance to help sick people. They used ways to remove extra fluids. One way was bloodletting. This is when a doctor takes blood out of the body. This idea was popular for a long time. Later, scientists found microbes. This showed that humorism was not correct.
