Galen wanted to know how bodies work. In his time, it was against the law to study human bodies. So, he studied animals instead. He used Barbary apes for his research. Later, he used pigs. He believed animal bodies were like human bodies.

This helped him learn about anatomy, which is the study of body parts.

Galen also studied the four humors. These were four liquids in the body: blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow bile. His ideas were very powerful. They shaped medicine for over 1,300 years. He even served as a doctor to Roman emperors. He lived through a big plague too. This sickness was called the Antonine Plague. He wrote many books about his work.
