He lived in England a long time ago. He was a priest, but he was also a great scientist.

Hales studied how plants work. He looked at how water moves through them. He called this transpiration, which is when water leaves a plant through its leaves.

He also thought that plants might use light to grow. He found that air enters plants through their leaves and trunks.

Hales also studied how animals and humans work. He was the first person to measure blood pressure. He did this by putting small tubes into arteries. This showed him the force of the blood. He even studied how the heart pumps blood.

He made many useful tools. He built a pneumatic trough to collect gases over water. This helped other scientists study air. He also made large bellows to act as ventilators.

These tools moved fresh air into ships and prisons. This helped keep people healthy. Hales died at age 84. He was buried near the church where he worked.
