Before him, people believed a doctor named Galen. Galen thought blood moved through tiny holes in the heart. Ibn al-Nafis did not think this was true. He studied how bodies work by looking at them closely. This is called anatomy. He found that blood moves from the right side of the heart to the lungs. This is called pulmonary circulation. This was a very big discovery. He also studied how blood moves through tiny tubes. These are called capillaries. Because of his great work, some call him the father of circulatory physiology. He also served as a chief doctor in many hospitals.
