He originally planned for this encyclopedia to reach 300 volumes. Although he only completed 80 volumes before his death, it remains one of the largest medical encyclopedias ever written. It served as a complete summary of the medical knowledge available in the Islamic world. He also wrote a famous commentary on anatomy when he was only 29 years old. This work is highly valued by historians today for its description of pulmonary circulation.

His contributions extended to many other specialized areas of science and study. He wrote a book on ophthalmology, which is the study of the eyes, called al-Muhaḏḏab fī al-Kuhl. He also studied the effects of diet on health in his book Kitāb al-Mukhtār fī al-Aghḏiyah. Interestingly, he even wrote a philosophical treatise that some claim is the first theological novel. His work on disease outbreaks was also quite advanced. He once created an outbreak map to find the origin of malnutrition in Damascus.
