Frank Pantridge was a doctor from Northern Ireland. He helped change how we treat heart emergencies. He studied medicine at Queen's University of Belfast. During World War II, he served in the British Army. He was a prisoner of war for a time. This experience left him with heart health issues for life.

Pantridge wanted to help people before they reached a hospital. He saw that many people died from ventricular fibrillation. This is a condition where the heart beats in a messy way. To help, he made a mobile coronary care unit. This was an ambulance with special tools and staff.

He also made the portable defibrillator. This tool sends a shock to help the heart work. His first version was very heavy. It weighed 70 kg and used car batteries. By 1968, he made a light version. It weighed only 3 kg. It used a small part made by NASA. His work helped create the AED. This is a tool that people can use safely. His plan for care is now used all over the world.
