Victor moved to Australia to study. He went to the University of Sydney. Later, he trained in London and the United States. He became a surgeon who fixed hearts. He helped start a special unit at St Vincent's Hospital. This unit helped people get new hearts.

His team was very good at their work. Most patients lived for at least one year. Victor also helped make new heart valves. A valve is a small part of the heart. He worked with engineers to make these parts.

Sadly, Victor died in 1991. Two men killed him during a crime. This was a very sad event for Australia. People were shocked by his death.

We still honor him today. He was named Australian of the Century in 1999. Many groups now do heart research in his name. A large ferry in Sydney even carries his name.
