He was known for his work on the heart.

Early in his career, Barnard helped sick babies. He found a way to fix a problem in their guts. This problem is called intestinal atresia. It happens when the intestines do not get enough blood. His new way of fixing it saved ten babies.

Barnard also studied in the United States. He learned about the heart-lung machine. This machine helps people during heart surgery. In 1967, he did something very big. He performed the first human-to-human heart transplant. He took a heart from one person and put it into another. The first patient was Louis Washkansky. Louis could talk to his wife after the surgery. He died 18 days later from pneumonia.

Barnard worked with Hamilton Naki at a hospital. Naki was a lab technician. Barnard said Naki was a very skilled craftsman. He was especially good at stitching.
