Jan Swammerdam was a scientist from the Netherlands. He loved to study small things. He used a microscope, which is a tool that makes tiny things look big.

Jan studied insects very closely. Many people thought insects were simple animals. They thought insects just appeared out of nowhere. Jan proved this was wrong. He showed that all insects start from eggs. He saw that a caterpillar is the same animal as a butterfly. It just grows and changes slowly.

Jan also looked at bees. People used to think the queen bee was a male. Jan used his microscope to look inside her. He found eggs and proved she was a mother.

He even studied how muscles work. He used a frog muscle for his test. Some people thought air flowed into muscles to make them move. Jan put the muscle in a tube with water. He saw the water did not rise when the muscle moved. This showed that no air or fluid flows into the muscle to make it move.
