A heart transplant is a way to save lives. It is for people with very sick hearts. Doctors use a healthy heart from a donor. A donor is someone who has recently died.

There are two main ways to do this. In one way, doctors remove the old heart. Then they put the new heart in its place. In another way, they leave the old heart inside. They add the new heart next to it. This is called a piggyback transplant.

Scientists have worked on this for a long time. In 1964, a doctor used a chimpanzee heart. This was a xenotransplant. That means the organ came from a different species. Later, doctors found ways to use human hearts. The first human-to-human transplant was done by Christiaan Barnard.

Today, about 5,000 transplants happen every year. More than half of these are in the US. A big center for this is in Tennessee. Most people live for about 15 years after surgery. This treatment helps people live longer and feel better.
