He first wrote about the doctor in letters. He sent these letters to his children. He was a soldier in a big war. He did not want to write about the war. He wanted his letters to be fun and full of wonder. This idea became his famous books.

His book, *The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle*, won a Newbery Medal. This is a prize for great books. He also wrote *Porridge Poetry*. These are light poems for children. He wrote other books like *Noisy Nora*. That book is about a girl who eats loudly. Lofting also wrote one long poem for adults. It was called *Victory for the Slain*. It was about the sadness of war. He died in California in 1947. People still read his stories today.
