Crawford Long was a doctor from Georgia.

He wanted to help people feel better. Long studied medicine at several colleges. He learned a lot about how to treat patients.

In 1842, Long found a new way to stop pain. He used a liquid called sulfuric ether. He put the liquid on a towel. The patient would breathe in the scent. This was an anesthetic, which is a way to make a person sleep or not feel pain.

Long used this to remove a tumor from a man's neck. He used it for many other surgeries too.

Other doctors also claimed they found ether first. This led to a big fight called the "ether controversy." Long did not write about his work right away. He wanted to be sure his results were right. He finally published his findings in 1849.

Many people now agree that Long was the first to use it for surgery. A statue of him stands in the U.S. Capitol today.
