He was born in Georgia in 1831. He also served as an officer in the army. During a war, he was hurt in the chest. To help with his pain, he used morphine. This medicine became an addiction for him.

John wanted to find new ways to stop the pain. He began to experiment with many different things. He made a drink called French Wine Coca. Later, new laws meant he could not use alcohol. He had to make a new recipe. He worked with a friend to perfect it.

One day, he mixed his syrup with bubbly water by accident. He decided to sell this as a fountain drink. A man named Frank Robinson gave it the name Coca-Cola.
