He was born on December 17, 1838. His family worked in healthcare. He worked as a pharmacy technician. This means he helped a pharmacist prepare medicine. In some places, a pharmacist is called a chemist.

In 1863, Mariani made a new drink. He mixed Bordeaux wine with coca leaves. He called this drink Vin Mariani. He used extracts from many tons of leaves. This wine made him very rich and famous. Even Pope Leo XIII gave him a medal.

His drink helped lead to a new idea. A man named John S. Pemberton made a drink in 1885. He called it French Wine Coca. This drink was like a relative of Coca-Cola. Mariani's wine helped start this path. People sold his wine as a brain-tonic. It was a very popular drink in the 1800s. Mariani died on April 1, 1914.
