William Banting lived in England during the 1800s. He worked for a famous funeral business. His family helped with many royal funerals. They even helped with the funeral for King George III.

William wanted to lose weight. He tried many diets before. He tried fasting and exercise. None of these ways worked. He felt very heavy.

A medical expert gave him new advice. This expert was William Harvey. William changed what he ate every day. He ate four meals a day. He ate meat, greens, and fruit. He also drank dry wine.

He stayed away from certain foods. He did not eat sugar or starch. He also avoided milk, butter, and beer. This way worked for him. He wrote a book about his plan. It was called a Letter on Corpulence.

His book was very popular. Many people wanted to try his diet. People even used his name as a verb. In some places, they say "banting" to mean dieting. His ideas helped shape modern diets today.
