In 1978, Minnoch went to a hospital. He had massive edema. This is a condition where the body holds too much fluid. It was hard to move him. Firefighters had to remove a window to help. They used a special stretcher and many people.

Doctors gave him a diet of only vegetables. He stayed in the hospital for two years. He lost over 500 pounds. This was the largest weight loss ever recorded at that time.

He hoped for a new life.

Minnoch gained much of the weight back later. He died in 1983 at age 41. His cause of death was cardiac arrest. This means his heart stopped. He was buried in a large wooden casket. It took about 11 men to move it.
