Mathieu Orfila was a famous scientist. He was born in Minorca. He studied medicine in many cities. Later, he moved to Paris.

Orfila studied toxicology. Toxicology is the study of poisons. He is called the father of modern toxicology. This is because he made the field very exact. He wrote a book about poisons in 1813.

In his time, people often used arsenic. Arsenic is a type of poison. It was hard to find in food or bodies. Orfila made new ways to find it. He made tests much better.

He helped solve a big court case in 1840. A woman named Marie Lafarge was on trial. People thought she hurt her husband. A test called the Marsh test was used first. But the test was done the wrong way. Orfila looked at the evidence. He found the arsenic in the body. This helped the court find the truth. Orfila was a very important leader in medicine. He even led the Academy of Medicine in 1851.
