He also served as an officer in the Confederate States Army. Pemberton was born on July 8, 1831, in Knoxville, Georgia. He later moved to Rome, Georgia, as a child. He earned his medical degree in 1850 when he was nineteen. This training helped him understand how different substances work. His talent for chemistry would change how people drink soda forever.

His path to inventing a famous drink began with a hard job. In April 1865, he was hurt during the Battle of Columbus. He received a sabre wound to his chest. To help with the pain, he used morphine. This medicine became a hard addiction for him to stop. In 1866, he started experimenting with new things to find a cure. He tried making syrups from plants like the buttonbush. He also created a drink called Pemberton's French Wine Coca.

New laws changed how he made his recipes. In 1886, Atlanta passed laws that limited alcohol. Pemberton had to make a new version without it. He worked with a drugstore owner named Willis E. Venable. They used trial and error to find the right mix. One day, he accidentally mixed his syrup with carbonated water. This mistake turned the medicine into a fountain drink. A man named Frank Mason Robinson gave it the name Coca-Cola.

Life was not easy for Pemberton during this time. He became ill and was nearly bankrupt. He had a feeling his drink would one day be a national drink. However, he needed money to pay for his medical needs. In 1888, he sold the rights to his recipe. He sold them to Asa Griggs Candler for 300 dollars. In today's money, that is about 10,230 dollars.
