In 1893, Bradham created a new recipe in New Bern. He worked at the Bradham Drug Company. His shop had a soda fountain for customers. He mixed kola nut extract, vanilla, and rare oils together. At first, he called this mixture "Brad's Drink." On August 28, 1898, he renamed it Pepsi-Cola. He chose this name by combining the words "dyspepsia" and "cola." He wanted the drink to help with digestion. His assistant, James Henry King, was the first person to taste it.

Success did not last forever for the Pepsi-Cola Company. On May 31, 1923, the company declared bankruptcy. This happened because the price of sugar changed too much. After World War I, sugar cost 28 cents per pound. Before the war, it only cost three cents per pound. Bradham bought a lot of sugar at the high price. Then, the price of sugar dropped very quickly. He sold his company assets for $30,000. Bradham returned to running his drug store until he died in 1934.
