This medicine is called quinine. It helps prevent malaria, which is a sickness. His work helped many people stay healthy. He became one of the wealthiest people in American history.

Weightman's company worked in a very clever way. They made a synthetic form of quinine. Synthetic means they made the drug in a lab.

Before this, people had to get quinine from other places. During the Civil War, it was hard to get quinine from Britain. Because of this, Weightman's company became very important. They could provide the medicine when others could not. In 1875, they even won a special medal for their engineering.

Weightman's journey began in England. He was born on September 30, 1813, in Waltham. When he was 16, he moved to the United States.

He went to work with his uncle, John Farr. Farr was a chemist who started a chemical firm. In 1836, Weightman joined Thomas Powers to start a new company. This company was eventually called Powers & Weightman. It grew into a very large and famous business.

Weightman was also famous for owning much land. He bought hundreds of acres of farms in Philadelphia.

He used this land to build many neighborhoods for families. He lived in a huge country house called Ravenhill. This house sat on a ridge near Wissahickon Creek. His daughter, Anne, became a partner in the family business. She was the only woman in the U.S. to hold such a high role then. Weightman died in 1904 at the age of 90.

We can still see Weightman's name today. A building at the University of Pennsylvania is called Weightman Hall.

It sits right next to a place called Franklin Field. His large home, Ravenhill, became a school for many years. Today, that land is part of Thomas Jefferson University. His life shows how one person can change a whole city. He left a big mark on the history of Philadelphia.
