Frederick Weyerhaeuser was a very successful wood businessman. He was known as the "timber-king of the Northwest." He started a huge company that is still around today. This company owns sawmills and paper factories. It also owns many large areas of forest land. In 2006, his wealth was worth $85 billion in that year's money. Forbes even named him the eighth-richest American of all time.

His journey to success happened in many steps. First, he worked at a brewery in Pennsylvania. He left that job because he thought brewers became their own best customers. Next, he worked on a farm for one year. Then, he moved to Illinois to work on a railroad. Finally, he found a job at a sawmill. He started as a night fireman. He worked his way up to being a manager and a salesman.

Frederick was born in Germany on November 21, 1834. His family lived in a place called the Grand Duchy of Hesse. He was one of 11 children in his family. When he was 12, his father died. This meant Frederick had to stop his studies to help on the farm. In 1852, at age 17, he moved to the United States. He landed in New York City in July.

Frederick used his savings to buy a wood business. He formed the Weyerhaeuser-Denkmann Lumber Company with his brother-in-law. He also helped lead a group called a syndicate. This was a network of many different lumber interests. In 1872, he started a company to handle logs on the Mississippi River. Later, in 1900, he bought timberland in the Pacific Northwest. He founded the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company during this time.

His life connects to many things we see today. The Weyerhaeuser Company is still the largest seller of timber in the world. Many people use the paper and wood products his company makes. Frederick also cared about his home community. In 1904, he built a music hall in Saulheim, Germany. He died in 1914 and was buried in Illinois. He was later put into the U.S. Business Hall of Fame.
