Marshall Field was a very famous American businessman. He started a large company in Chicago called Marshall Field and Company.

He was known for changing how people bought things in stores. Before his time, shoppers had to be very careful when buying goods. This was often called "let the buyer beware." Field wanted shopping to feel much more pleasant and special. He helped turn simple shopping into a grand experience for everyone.

Field changed the way stores worked step by step. First, he made sure prices were always the same. Next, he brought in goods from many different countries. He also offered unconditional refunds to help customers feel safe. This meant if a person was unhappy, they could get their money back. He also told his workers not to push products on people. He is often linked to the famous idea that "the customer is always right."

Field's journey began on a farm in Conway, Massachusetts. He was born there on August 18, 1834. At age 17, he began working in a dry goods store. Dry goods are things like cloth and fabric. He moved to Chicago in 1856 when he was 22 years old. He worked for a company called Cooley, Wadsworth & Co. first. Later, he became a partner in a firm called Field, Palmer, Leiter & Co. in 1865. By 1881, he owned the whole business under his own name.

His business grew to be quite huge. In 1867, his company made $12 million in revenue. His stores survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. They also stayed strong during the Panic of 1873. Interestingly, his wholesale business made even more money than his stores. In the 1880s, wholesale made five times more than retail. He even built a special building for it in 1887. By 1905, his total fortune was worth $125 million.

Field used his wealth to help many important causes. He gave $1 million to help start the Field Museum of Natural History. He also helped co-found the University of Chicago. These gifts helped create things that people still use today. Field died in New York City on January 16, 1906. He was 71 years old when he passed away. He was buried in Graceland Cemetery in Chicago. His retail company was later joined with Macy's.
