He was a businessman, a politician, and a leader. He helped build big things like railroads and banks. Some people called him a "robber baron." This means they thought he gained wealth in ways that were not fair. He lived during a time of great change in the United States. His life shows how much one person could change a whole state.

Stanford's success came from many different jobs.

He started as a lawyer in New York. Then, a fire destroyed his law books and property. Because of this, he moved to California in 1852. He wanted to find new ways to make money during the gold rush. He opened a store to sell things to miners. Later, he became a very successful merchant in Sacramento.

His biggest work was with the railroads.

Stanford was part of a group called "The Big Four." This group included Charles Crocker, Mark Hopkins, and Collis P. Huntington. They invested in the Central Pacific Railroad. Stanford became its president in 1861. He helped build the tracks across the mountains. On May 10, 1869, he even drove the "Last Spike" to finish the railroad.

Stanford also served as a leader in government.
