Van Buren learned how to work with many different people. His father owned an inn and a tavern. As a child, Martin watched people from all kinds of groups visit the inn. This helped him become a great political organizer later in life. He studied law after finishing his basic school education. He was a small man with reddish sideburns. People even gave him nicknames like "Little Van" and the "Red Fox."

He spent many years building strong political groups. Van Buren helped found the Democratic Party with Andrew Jackson. He led a group in New York called the "Bucktails." This group used a system called the Albany Regency to stay powerful. Van Buren held many high jobs before becoming president. He was a U.S. Senator and the Secretary of State. He also served as the Vice President starting in 1833.

Van Buren became president in 1837, but his time in office was difficult. A major money problem called the Panic of 1837 occurred. He tried to fix this with the Independent Treasury system. This plan kept government money in vaults instead of banks. He also dealt with the Second Seminole War. Many people were unhappy with his choices during this time. Because of these problems, he lost his re-election bid in 1840 to William Henry Harrison.

Even after losing, Van Buren stayed active in politics. He became very interested in stopping the spread of slavery. In 1848, he ran for president with the Free Soil Party. This was a new party that stood against slavery. Later, during the American Civil War, he supported President Abraham Lincoln. He died of asthma in 1862 at his home in New York. He was 79 years old when he passed away.
