This helped him become a great political organizer later in life. He studied law after finishing his basic school education. He was a small man with reddish sideburns. People even gave him nicknames like "Little Van" and the "Red Fox."

He spent many years building strong political groups. Van Buren helped found the Democratic Party with Andrew Jackson. He led a group in New York called the "Bucktails." This group used a system called the Albany Regency to stay powerful. Van Buren held many high jobs before becoming president. He was a U.S. Senator and the Secretary of State. He also served as the Vice President starting in 1833.

Van Buren became president in 1837, but his time in office was difficult. A major money problem called the Panic of 1837 occurred. He tried to fix this with the Independent Treasury system. This plan kept government money in vaults instead of banks. He also dealt with the Second Seminole War. Many people were unhappy with his choices during this time. Because of these problems, he lost his re-election bid in 1840 to William Henry Harrison.

Even after losing, Van Buren stayed active in politics. He became very interested in stopping the spread of slavery. In 1848, he ran for president with the Free Soil Party. This was a new party that stood against slavery. Later, during the American Civil War, he supported President Abraham Lincoln. He died of asthma in 1862 at his home in New York. He was 79 years old when he passed away.

He later learned English in school. This makes him the only U.S. president to have spoken English as a second language. His father, Abraham, ran a local inn and tavern. Watching many different people at the inn helped him learn to interact with various social groups.

After finishing his basic education, Van Buren studied law. He apprenticed under Peter Silvester and later William P. Van Ness.

Through these studies, he learned the complex details of New York state politics. He was a small man with striking features. His reddish sideburns and prominent nose earned him the nickname "the Red Fox." He was also called "Little Van." He eventually became a successful lawyer and entered the New York State Senate in 1812. He later served as the New York Attorney General in 1815.

Van Buren became a master of political organization. He led a faction called the "Bucktails" in New York.

He established a political machine known as the Albany Regency. This system used patronage and loyal newspapers to maintain power. The Regency relied on a coalition of small farmers and the Tammany Hall machine in New York City. This organized approach allowed him to rise through many high offices. He served as U.S. Minister to the United Kingdom and as the tenth Secretary of State. He also served as a U.S. Senator from New York.

In 1833, Van Buren became the vice president under Andrew Jackson. With Jackson's support, he won the presidency in the election of 1836.

His presidency faced immediate challenges. A major economic crisis called the Panic of 1837 occurred. To manage the crisis, Van Buren proposed the Independent Treasury system. This plan suggested the federal government store funds in vaults rather than in banks. However, conservative Democrats and Whigs in Congress delayed this plan until 1840. His term also included the costly Second Seminole War.

Van Buren's political views shifted as the country debated the issue of slavery. He refused to admit Texas to the Union as a slave state. This stance angered many Southern Democrats. In the election of 1840, he lost his re-election bid to William Henry Harrison.

Later, he became an important leader for the abolitionist movement. He ran for president in 1848 as the nominee for the Free Soil Party. This new party was formed to oppose the spread of slavery. His candidacy helped the Whig nominee, Zachary Taylor, win the election.

Even after his time in the Free Soil Party, Van Buren remained a significant figure. He eventually returned to the Democratic Party. During the American Civil War, he was a "War Democrat." This meant he supported the policies of President Abraham Lincoln. Van Buren died of asthma in 1862 at his home in Kinderhook.
