Eli Lilly was a man who changed how we make medicine. He was born on July 8, 1838, in Baltimore, Maryland. His family moved from France to Maryland before he was born. Later, they moved to Kentucky and finally to Indiana. As a teenager, Lilly became very interested in chemicals. At age 16, he visited a drugstore in Lafayette, Indiana. He watched a pharmacist named Henry Lawrence prepare drugs. Lilly spent four years learning from him. This apprenticeship taught him how to mix chemicals and run a business.

Life was not always easy for Lilly after the war. He tried to run a cotton plantation in Mississippi. This business failed because of a drought. He also lost his first wife, Emily, to a mosquito-borne disease. These hard times led him to return to Indiana. In 1876, he opened his own drug company in Indianapolis. He started with very little money. He had about $1,000 in cash and some equipment.
