His journey into the candy business happened in several steps. First, he learned to make caramels using fresh milk. He started the Lancaster Caramel Company, which became very successful. Many important things grew around his chocolate factory. The area became a company town known as Hershey, Pennsylvania. This town included houses, businesses, and churches for the workers. Hershey also focused on helping children through the Milton Hershey School. He started this school in 1909 to help local orphans. In 1918, he gave most of his assets to a trust for the school. This trust still helps run the school and the Hershey Company today. He even helped start a medical center in 1963 with a $50 million gift.

During World War II, his company did a very important job. They made special chocolate bars for soldiers serving overseas. These were called Ration D Bars and Tropical Chocolate Bars. The army needed bars that would not melt in hot weather. The Ration D Bar even had a flavor that was not too tasty. This was done so soldiers would not crave them too much. Between 1940 and 1945, the company made over three billion of these bars. This helped the troops stay fed while they were far from home.
