Henri Nestlé was a man who helped change the food industry. He was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, on August 10, 1814. He grew up in a very large family with fourteen children. His father worked as a glazier, which is a person who works with glass. The Nestlé family name comes from a word for a small bird's nest.

This name was even shown on their family coat of arms. It showed three young birds in a nest being fed by their mother.

Nestlé learned a lot about science when he was young. Before he turned 20, he worked for four years at a pharmacy. A pharmacy is a place where medicines are made and sold. In 1839, he moved to Switzerland and began working in Lausanne. He was allowed to perform chemical experiments and make prescriptions.

He later changed his name to Henri Nestlé to fit in better. He lived in a French-speaking area called Vevey for a time.

One of his most important jobs was helping small babies. During the 1840s, many babies died because fresh milk was hard to find. Nestlé wanted to make a substitute for breast milk. He worked with a scientist named Jean Balthasar Schnetzler on this project.

They mixed cow's milk with grain and sugar. They also removed the acid and starch from wheat flour. They did this because those parts were hard for babies to digest. This new product was called "kindermehl," or "children flour."

This new flour was very easy for parents to use. It only needed to be boiled in water before feeding. People in Europe began buying it very quickly. By the 1870s, the product was even being sold in the United States.

In the 1870s, a bottle of his food cost about $0.50. His work with milk helped other people make new foods too. A man named Daniel Peter used Nestlé's milk process to make milk chocolate in 1875.

Nestlé's hard work led to a very famous company. In 1879, he and Daniel Peter formed the Nestlé Company. This company grew to become one of the largest food companies in Europe.

Nestlé sold his company in 1875 to his business partners. He spent his later years living in places like Montreux and Glion. He helped local people by giving them small loans. Henri Nestlé died in Glion on July 7, 1890.
